Future significant changes coming to our local Plastics Industry? “Product Stewardship and Mandatory

The Waste Management and Resource Recovery Association of Australia (WMRR) has asked

their members for feedback on the Product Stewardship Amendment (Packaging and

Plastics) Bill 2019 as read by Australian Greens Senator Peter Whish-Wilson for the second

time in Federal Parliament in September 2019. The WMRR intends to prepare a submission

as a response to the inquiry by the Environment and Communications Legislation

Committee which Committee has been given the task of inquiry and reporting to the

Senate.

The Bill will:

- Make the 2025 National Packaging Targets mandatory;

- Establish a mandatory Product Stewardship Scheme for manufacturers, importers

and distributors of consumer packaging and certain single-use plastics; and

- Prescribe targets, prohibitions, design requirements, labelling requirements, and

financial contributions in relation to the packaging and products identified under the

scheme.

The SPE: A-NZ Section has organised this seminar to provide an opportunity to its

stakeholders to discuss these proposed measures.

The Section aims in this way to contribute to the discussion of the proposed Bill and the forming

of opinion on the proposed measures. These measures would require significant change to

the Plastics Packaging Industry and could be a signal of potentially further extension to

measures affecting the Plastics Industry in general.

The presentations and discussions will be followed by a networking session with finger food

and drinks.

This seminar is in collaboration with WMRR.
